Tricia Sciortino:
Okay, welcome back, Mike, to the One Next Step, and thanks for agreeing to answer one more bonus question. You ready?
Mike Byam:
Sure. It’s like final jeopardy.
Tricia Sciortino:
It is. This is for the big one. Okay, here we go. Gift giving can sometimes be a delicate subject for businesses, but kind of as you explained in the episode, it can play an important part in recognizing a team. So how can leaders give recognition that resonates with employees, that make them feel appreciated, but does not create a sense of entitlement? Whoa, that’s loaded.
Mike Byam:
It’s a question that people raise from time to time about entitlement or over-recognition. If I recognize people too often will it just become mundane? And so, what we’ve found is there are not a lot of cases out there in the corporate world where too much recognition is happening. And what we’re seeing is, and we’ve seen for an extended period of time is, as leaders, and as organizations, if we’re using recognition to highlight what, and encourage what we refer to as the ABCs — which are the attitudes, behaviors, and contributions that the company needs to accomplish its mission, then it just can’t happen too frequently. And so we’re, we’re encouraging those behaviors as a business, as an employer that we want to see in our employees. We want others to emulate. And if it’s done the right way, it can’t be overdone. More is more.
Tricia Sciortino:
This is not a case of less is more. This is the case of more is better. You can’t over do it. No, that is great advice because there have been times that we’ve sat and pondered that ourselves. Are we giving too much? What is the opposite of the boy who cried wealth? Does it become complacent? Does positive feedback become complacency because you give it all the time? So I think it’s great to hear that historically speaking, that that is false thinking and you cannot over recognize.
Mike Byam:
Yeah. I would, I think you sum that up very nicely because if you’re specific about the contribution and how it’s impacting things and you’ve seen people continue to raise their game, you’ve gotta you gotta celebrate and acknowledge that, for sure.
Tricia Sciortino:
Yeah. Well, thank you. Thank you for the great reminder. Thanks for this amazing conversation. Thanks for talking to us about all things recognition. I hope everyone’s listening and taking feverish notes.
