In the bookkeeping world – let alone the virtual bookkeeping space – there’s a healthy degree of competition. Qualified bookkeepers have many options available when it comes to deciding with which company to align their talents.
At BELAY, we believe our Virtual Bookkeepers are a highly qualified, hard working, and unique bunch of professionals. There’s a reason that our online talent reviews rank high and are overwhelmingly positive. Clients who partner with BELAY will find the perfect fit for their finance needs in our Virtual Bookkeepers. Client satisfaction, client retention and client referrals are a direct result from our level of service which provides plenty of opportunity for our Virtual Bookkeepers.
In order to become a star-status Virtual Bookkeeper, there are a couple things to add to your toolbox.
- Invest in yourself and your business. You'll need a reliable computer and a fast internet connection. You will also want to ensure you also have a dependable and regularly monitored form of communication set up so that your client will know where and when to contact you.
- Complete any additional applicable training or classes. You will want to be able to know how to properly record transactions, document and prepare records and reports, and record accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Learn the ins and outs of the software you'll need to use. Take a class or two on commonly used bookkeeping websites and applications to refresh your memory. You'll want to know the ins and outs before introducing them to your client and potentially needing to troubleshoot any hiccups.
We have more than 107 bookkeepers among BELAY’s ranks. Some work part-time hours while others carry a heavier load. On average, a BELAY bookkeeper may serve up to 12 clients, however some prefer 1-2 clients.
And becoming a BELAY bookkeeper? Well, it’s a bit more competitive than just filling out an online application and getting an offer the following week. With nearly 800 people applying for a BELAY bookkeeping spot each quarter in 2019, the company must be vigilant and discerning when deciding just who gets to make the cut.
So, how can you become a Virtual Bookkeeper? We spoke with our talent acquisition manager with BELAY to learn more about how to become a BELAY bookkeeper.
How often do you look for new bookkeepers?
We have bookkeepers who started with us at the beginning in 2011, and we are constantly looking for great bookkeeping talent. So far this year, we've brought on an additional 40 new bookkeepers to serve our amazing clients.
Describe the ideal BELAY bookkeeper candidate.
First and foremost, we are looking for someone with a servant's heart who wants the best for our Clients and their business. Candidates also need a broad range of technology experience and emotional intelligence (ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others). We also look for those who have at least 5 years of experience with bookkeeping and/or accounting, and who also have QuickBooks knowledge.
Detail the BELAY bookkeeper hiring process, from application to start date.
When we receive an application, our TA team reviews it to see if the candidate fits the minimum requirements. If so, they are invited to complete a basic accounting test. If the candidate passes the assessment, an invitation for a Zoom video interview is extended.
Following the interview, candidates complete a two-phase QuickBooks assessment. Part one is a 21-question test. Part two is an assessment, which is like a real-life roleplaying task. We explain a mock scenario, which includes money spent and funds received. The candidate is asked to provide a profit-and-loss, general ledger and balance sheet for two consecutive months.
Once the process is completed and a match is made, a contract will be extended to the candidate.
What are some signs that an applicant will be successful with BELAY?
Throughout the interview process, we are primarily looking to see if the candidate shows a kind, humble heart while also displaying resourcefulness, timeliness and competency. This delicate balance of professional skills and emotional intelligence is what makes our Clients and our Virtual Bookkeepers successful.
What are some signs that an applicant may not be a good fit?
When their questions focus on [making] money and moving up the ladder (such as someone who wants to provide CFO- or CPA-level service), those aren’t good signs. Both of these indicate to me that they will not be satisfied in the day-to-day demands and routine bookkeeping needs of our clients.
What role does client feedback or needs have in the “matching” process?
Most bookkeeping needs are standard, with only a few clients needing additional support with reporting or back-office work. We try to match our clients and bookkeepers within the same time zone. We also try to match personalities as much as possible.
Why should bookkeepers choose BELAY as a place to work vs. competitors?
I believe that our mission to glorify God and give God the credit for our success breeds an environment of trust and loyalty. We take care of our contractors, giving them support and encouragement every day!
