Why Doing Good is Good for Your Business

Whether you lead a church,  a tech startup, a marketing agency, or a nonprofit, there’s one strategy you can rely on: Doing good is good for business.

So, how can we avoid losing this key in the hustle and bustle of a task-oriented workplace? That’s exactly what today’s guest Jeff Henderson is here to help us answer. As one of Forbes Magazine’s “20 speakers you shouldn’t miss,” Jeff is highly respected by the for-profit and nonprofit worlds alike.

Throughout this episode, we’ll discuss how to pinpoint customers’ true needs, find ways to meet those needs, and emphasize doing good as a part of your business strategy.

Here are a few of our top takeaways:

1. Perception is reality.

Adages exist for a reason, and “perception is reality” is no exception. No matter what opinions you hold or what goals you’re working toward, you’re not the one who determines what your business represents. In today’s world, a business is what customers tell other customers it is.

Your perception in the community is extremely important – and it’s affected by everything from how you interact with your customers on the phone to your social media presence to how clean your workplace is. Make sure you are putting yourself out there in a way that will attract more customers. A helpful question to keep in mind is, “What did you do to wow the customer?” Over time, those “wow” moments add up and shape your business’s story.

2. Shrink the gap between what you’re known for and what you want to be known for.

What you want to be known for is important for your company’s success, as is what your business is already known for. Looking at these questions in tandem is essential to reaching the answers you want for your business. By asking what you are known for, you can pinpoint if your customers believe that you deliver on whatever it is that you’d like to be known for.

The first step? Actually identifying what you are known for. Then, every day you should be trying to close that gap. We are all a work in progress. The best leaders are always working to be more than what they are today. Try talking to others in the community to find out what your business is known for. That information will give you the starting point you need to begin moving toward what you want it to be.

3. Make sure you are keeping the “social” in social media.

Take a look at your social media feed. Is it all about your business and how awesome you are? Or do you put the focus more on your customers and community? Are you the hero or are they? Are you interacting with your followers in the comments and threads, or is your social media just a one-way communication tool?

Everyone wants a high level of engagement – but if you aren’t responding to comments, it’s time to put the “social” back in social media. Remember, connection is the difference between digital media and social media. Engaging with your followers is an easy way to build loyalty and trust with potential customers.
