5 Myths That Keep You from Getting the Help You Actually Need

If you’ve ever told yourself, “I’ll get help later — once I’m more successful, more overwhelmed, more … ” — this video is your wake-up call.

I started my career as an executive assistant. Today, I’m the CEO of the company I used to support, and that journey taught me something most leaders don’t realize: the right executive assistant doesn’t just help you stay organized. They change how you lead.

In this video, I break down the five most common myths I hear from high-performing, overloaded leaders — and trust me, I’ve heard them all. These aren’t just misconceptions. They’re the stories we tell ourselves that keep us stuck, stressed, and one missed meeting away from burnout.

Key Takeaways:

  • An EA isn’t a luxury — it’s what keeps you from burning out.
  • AI tools are great, but they can’t replace strategic human support.
  • Reactive delegation leads to chaos; rhythm builds momentum.
  • Mistakes don’t kill trust — they build it when handled well.
  • Great EAs don’t just save time. They catch what you’d miss.

The first myth? That an EA is a luxury. This one drives me nuts.

Leaders say, “I’ll hire one when I’m more successful.” But if your brain is full, your decisions are stalling, and your calendar looks like a game of Tetris, you’re already there.

An EA isn’t a reward you earn once you’ve made it. It’s the support that allows you to sustain success without breaking in the process. For me, the turning point came when I realized I was spending more time managing the work than leading the business.

That’s not leadership — that’s survival.

Myth two? “I’ll just use ChatGPT.”

Listen, I love AI. We use it every day. But no tool can replace the nuance, intuition, and strategic thinking of a great EA.

Cameron, my EA, uses Fathom to summarize meetings while I stay fully present. But beyond the tools, she understands how I work. She protects my white space, knows when I need focus time, and manages my energy better than I do.

Myth three is one I used to live by: “I’ll hand things off as they come up.” Sounds easy. Doesn’t work.

That approach turns your EA into a task rabbit instead of a partner.

What changed everything for me was building rhythm — weekly meetings, shared lists, and open loops tracked in real-time. Delegation without structure burns everyone out. Delegation with rhythm builds trust and momentum.

Then there’s the fear — myth four: “What if they mess it up?”

Let me tell you, mistakes will happen. It’s how we handle them that matters.

When Cameron once sent a key meeting invite in the wrong time zone, she didn’t panic — she solved it before I even had to ask.

That’s the kind of trust you build when you stop micromanaging and start actually leading.

And finally, myth five: “An assistant isn’t income-producing.”

I’ve seen EAs catch six-figure billing errors, flag lost invoices, and save deals that would’ve otherwise died in the follow-up.

If you think growth only comes from sales, you’re missing the quiet, powerful work that happens behind the scenes — and often, that’s where the real leverage is.

Here’s the truth: Your assistant isn’t just there to lighten the load.

They’re there to expand your leadership. If you’re tired of being the bottleneck in your own business, stop waiting until you “deserve” help. You’re already doing enough. Now it’s time to lead differently.
